Sedation Dentistry in Austin

The atmosphere in our office is calming, and Dr. Bell and his team have an easygoing confidence that lowers the tension level for our patients. Still, we understand how many people have fears about getting the dental care they need. Sometimes sedation dentistry can help.

We Do Our Best to Dispel Your Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety can stem from a negative experience in the past, a fear of needles, or nervousness triggered by even the smells in a doctor’s office. The level of anxiety can be minor or so extreme that treatment is avoided completely. If you are anxious about dental treatment, you are not alone. There are many people who feel the way you do, and our office can help reduce or eliminate your anxiety around dental care. As we learn more about you and your desires, we can discuss with you the types of sedation which might be the best for you.

Sedation Dentistry with Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A very effective way to reduce anxiety and fear is the use of nitrous oxide. We have it available in each treatment area, delivered through a nasal mask, and it really helps you relax. Many people report that the time in the dental chair goes much faster, and that an hour feels more like 30 or 40 minutes. Nitrous oxide is well suited for dentistry, as the gas leaves your system rapidly, leaving little or no “hangover,” and allowing you to safely operate a vehicle.

Oral Sedation

If a more pronounced, deeper sedation is desired, we can make your dental visits like a “day surgery” by oral sedation. Many times, there is little, or no recollection of the dental work done. Oral sedation requires that there has been nothing to eat or drink at least six hours before the procedure, and that you have a designated driver to and from your appointment. The oral sedation is not only for the anxious.

If you are busy and want to get your work done in the least number of visits, then sedation can help you relax and stay in the chair comfortably for longer periods of time. This allows for longer, well planned visits that are more effective compared to lots of shorter visits that involve travel time and missed work.

Intravenous Sedation

For those who are nervous about facing the dental chair, we can offer intravenous sedation dentistry. We have an excellent relationship with a dental anesthesiologist who comes to our office to offer IV sedation.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry offers several benefits, making dental procedures more comfortable and less stressful our patients in Austin:

  • Reduced Anxiety: Ideal for individuals with dental phobia or anxiety, sedation helps create a relaxed and calm state during treatment.
  • Pain Management: Ensures minimal discomfort during dental procedures, as sedation dulls pain perception.
  • Increased Cooperation: Facilitates cooperation from patients, particularly children or those with special needs, enabling the dentist to perform procedures more efficiently.
  • Time Efficiency: Allows for longer or multiple procedures to be performed in a single visit, reducing the overall time spent in the dental chair.
  • Memory Blockage: Patients often have little to no memory of the dental procedure, alleviating potential trauma associated with dental visits.

Sedation dentistry promotes a positive dental experience, making it an excellent option for those who may otherwise avoid necessary dental care due to fear or discomfort.
